TerraBayes is a tool that integrates soil parameters database and Bayesian Data Analaysis through the development of site-specific models. The models are used to make probabilistic predictions of soil parameters, and in turn selecting characteristic or representative profiles.
One distinctive feature of geotechnical engineering is that it deals with natural materials in an environment that is largely outside human's control. The physical ground reality that is of interest to a geotechnical engineer is very complex and changing at different time scales.
Geological materials are formed under a broad variety of complex conditions and involves large uncertainties. Single-point predictions of quantities have low likelihood of ever being realized in such a world. If room is not made to accommodate uncertainty, any conclusions reached will be open to question.
Enhancing decision-making in geotechnical engineering using statistical methods is about managing uncertainty, improving reliability, and optimizing designs based on data rather than solely on conservative assumptions or deterministic models.
